Plant-based brand Lightlife &#8211; owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/products-and-launches\/greenleaf-foods-launches-new-field-roast-lightlife-products-at-whole-foods\/\">Greenleaf Foods<\/a>, a subsidiary of Canadian meat giant <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/companies-and-portraits\/maple-leaf-announces-100m-indianapolis-tempeh-plant-for-lightlife\/\">Maple Leaf<\/a> &#8211; has overhauled 19 of its plant-based products, removing ingredients like carrageenan, eggs and maltodextrin, and claims to be laying down the gauntlet for its competitors to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a controversial move, Lightlife last year published an <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/vegconomistcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Lightlife-Open-Letter.pdf\">open letter<\/a> to Beyond Meat and <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/food-and-beverage\/impossible-foods-ready-to-launch-and-disrupt-in-australia-ahead-of-10-billion-ipo\/\">Impossible Foods<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/marketing-and-media\/lightlife-launches-campaign-against-impossible-foods-beyond-meat-enough-with-the-hyper-processed-ingredients-and-fake-blood\/\">a full-page ad<\/a> in the New York Times, stating: \u201cEnough with the hyper-processed ingredients\u201d and claiming to be committed to \u201cusing simple ingredients and methods.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37738\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/vegconomistcom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Impossible-Foods.jpeg\" alt=\"Impossible Foods\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Impossible-Foods.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Impossible-Foods-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Impossible-Foods-150x84.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Impossible-Foods-678x381.jpeg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Impossible Foods<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, the strategy received backlash throughout the plant-based sector, with many in the community looking to share a cohesive message about the benefits of shifting to a plant-based diet for health, animal welfare and the environment. Impossible and Beyond both <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.vegconom.de\/usa\/companies-and-portraits\/burger-wars-beyond-meat-and-impossible-foods-fight-back-read-their-official-rebuttals-to-lightlife\/\">offered rebuttals<\/a>, accusing Lightlife of hypocrisy as well as of making spurious and misleading claims. Impossible said: \u201cThe number of ingredients in a product (whether 11 or 18) is irrelevant,\u201d and that Lightlife\u2019s campaign was: \u201cFinanced by one of the largest animal agriculture companies in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a press release regarding the new cleaner recipes, the company states it has removed carrageenan from its Smart Dogs, the #1 selling plant-based hot dogs in the US, and has updated the recipe of its burger patties, sausage range and breakfast links and patties to be both vegan-certified and non-GMO. Marketing stunt or not, Lightlife\u2019s latest portfolio reinvention shows its commitment to using simple ingredients, easy-to-understand nutritional claims, and a transparent production process.
