Milk- and Dairy Alternatives

Milk Depot Launches At-Home Plant Milk Maker, Joining Growing Market for DIY Options

Milk Depot Inc. has launched its new Milk Maker, an appliance designed to help consumers create their own plant-based milks at home. The product promises to offer a healthier and more sustainable alternative to store-bought plant milks, by allowing users to transform nuts, grains, and seeds into fresh, filtered milk in under a minute.

The company has positioned the Milk Maker as a more eco-friendly option, eliminating the need for additives, preservatives, and packaging waste often associated with commercial milk products. By making milk at home, users also avoid the environmental impact of single-use cartons. The DIY appliance aims to reduce both the cost of milk as well as consumers’ environmental footprint.

“The launch of our Milk Maker represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide consumers with healthier and more sustainable choices,” said Edward Haugh, CEO of Milk Depot Inc.

One of the key features of the Milk Maker is its customization potential. The appliance supports a wide range of plant-based milks, including almond, oat, cashew, and soy, as well as more exotic options like hemp, macadamia, and hazelnut. This versatility allows consumers to tailor their milk to meet their dietary preferences, whether they are vegan, lactose-intolerant, or simply looking for variety.

The appliance is designed for ease of use, with a compact form that fits into most kitchens and an efficient cleaning process. The Milk Maker is expected to appeal to households looking for both a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way to produce plant-based milks.

Growth of DIY plant-milk makers

Milk Depot’s new product enters a growing market of at-home plant milk makers, with other companies also offering solutions for consumers who want to make their own milk. In London, UK-based Milky Plant has developed an appliance that can create a variety of plant milks, including buckwheat, oat, rice, and macadamia, while also collecting pulp for reuse in baking or composting. Milky Plant has reported a 400% year-over-year growth, and has doubled its international team size in the last year, reflecting strong demand for plant-based milk solutions.

In the United States, Uproot launched its plant milk dispensers in 2023, catering specifically to foodservice needs. The dispensers offer oat milk, soy milk, and chocolate peanut milk, and were recently acquired by plant-based beverage company Califia Farms. Meanwhile, in Germany, The Oater raised pre-seed funding in 2023 to develop a machine that allows foodservice establishments to produce fresh barista-style oat drinks on-site, without the use of packaging.

Haugh continued, “We are excited to offer a product that not only supports a healthier lifestyle but also contributes to the well-being of our planet.”
